WILD NIGHTS Character descriptions (order of appearance)
DAVID TODD: young, cocky and self assured, knows he is attractive to women, also a
brilliant astronomer determined to make his mark. But a shadow of his family’s
history of mental illness is always there.
MABEL TODD: also young, attractive, full of optimism and a desire to live life to its
fullest, unfettered by convention, has what she considers an open marriage with
David. But somehow feels unfulfilled.
SUSAN DICKINSON, middle aged, intelligent, easy to talk to, an elegant hostess and a
woman who likes to have fun (her father managed a tavern). Attracted to women
who are artistic and sociable, living the good life while the men are out making
NED DICKINSON, early 20s but young for his age, subject to epileptic fits, moody,
resistant to authority and schoolwork but a favorite of his aunt Emily because he is
so different. He has memorized the poems she wrote and showed to him.
MATTIE DICKINSON, teenager, at an awkward age and attracted to Mabel’s smiling
personality and music talent at the piano, jealous when her brother gets more
attention from Mabel than she does.
AUSTIN DICKINSON, middle aged, a lawyer and Amherst college treasurer, following
his father’s career path but more out of intertia than any great desire. Unhappy in
his marriage, close to his sisters, especially Emily with whom he shares an aversion
to polite society.
JOHN STEELE, in his seventies, president of Amherst College, likes to hear himself talk.
LAVINIA DICKINSON, middle aged, known as “Vinnie,” Like her sister has never
married and has always lived at the family Homestead in Amherst. Smart, can be
testy and likes to speak her mind. Close to her furry cat Miss Nobody.
MR & MRS JAMESON, mid to late age, neighbors who live across from the
MISS THORPE, young, student at Smith College in astronomy. In love with David.
FRANCINE, young, clerk at Macy’s. Likes to play with David.
EMILY DICKINSON, middle aged and young, poet, once loving and loved by Susan.
HIGGINSON, middle aged, publisher.
BANKER, middle to late aged.
